Baby wash does not damage baby's skin barrier function, study finds

Feb. 15, 2013 ? New research has found washing newborn babies in a specific baby wash is just as safe as using water alone in terms of maintaining healthy skin.

The findings by academics at The University of Manchester, published in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing, compared Johnson's Baby Top-to-Toe wash against plain bath water on 307 newborn babies over a four week period.

The findings challenge the current advice from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines, that baby wash should be avoided in the first 6-8 weeks after birth.

Newborn skin is different to adult skin. The skin barrier on newborn babies is less mature and likely to be more vulnerable to environmental threats. But the study found no difference in transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which indicates the amount of water that escapes from the skin, between newborns bathed in water alone or with the wash product. Skin hydration increased in the wash product group compared to water alone when a babies' hydration at two weeks was analysed.

Project lead Professor Dame Tina Lavender said this offered reassurance that the wash product was not affecting the infant's natural skin barrier integrity.

Professor Lavender, Professor of Midwifery at The University of Manchester, said: "Whilst internationally it has been accepted that appropriate cleansing practices are important, a dearth of good quality clinical trials has led to variations in baby skin care regimens. However, women can now be confident that using this specific baby cleansing product on newborn skin is equivalent to bathing in water alone.

"This trial adds to the existing but limited evidence in the area and provides healthcare professionals with the strongest level of evidence available to date. Therefore we should no longer base our practice on tradition and experience alone. We should share the evidence from this study with parents, so they are able to make their own informed choices." This research follows another recently published study conducted by The University of Manchester in which the use of Johnson's Baby Extra Sensitive Wipes was found to be equivalent to the use of water and cotton wool in terms of skin hydration. Mums taking part in the study also reported nappy rash as being higher in the water and cotton wool group.

The findings from both studies should offer reassurance to parents who choose to use these particular baby cleansing products. "These results should provide healthcare professionals and parents with much needed evidence-based information giving them the option to support the skin care cleansing regime chosen by individual parents for their newborn babies," Professor Lavender added.

Note: The study, funded by Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Johnson?s Baby but carried out under strict, independent scientific protocols, including blind testing and peer review. Over a three year period Professor Dame Tina Lavender led a multidisciplinary health team comprising of a neonatologist, paediatric dermatologist, statisticians and midwives. The trial was conducted with a total of 307 newborns and their mums over a four week period at Liverpool Women?s NHS Foundation Trust who were randomised into two groups: bathing with water alone, and bathing with Johnson?s Baby Top-to-Toe Bath. Mums were advised to bathe their newborn three times a week and not to use any other products on their babies? skin to ensure robust methodology.

Frito-Lay cuts local jobs, production

?Declining pretzel sales prompted Frito-Lay to cut jobs and reduce production at its Rold Gold facility.

The company, which had 162 employees, eliminated seven full-time and five part-time jobs. It also cut 15 workers to part-time hours.

Employees were told two weeks ago about the cuts.

The facility on 16th Street SW, west of Raff Road SW, is a specialty plant for Frito-Lay?s baked products. Its primary product is the Rold Gold pretzel line, but it also produces other snacks that are baked.

Frito-Lay is a division of Pepsico.

Hourly employees are represented by the Bakery Workers union Local 19, based in Cleveland.

Obama's Top Military Adviser Says Cuts Would Cost 'Time And Casualties'

It's been about a year and a half since Gen. Martin Dempsey left his job as chief of staff of the Army and became President Obama's top military adviser as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Dempsey is now responsible for reshaping the U.S. military after 10 years of war, which means scaling the forces down. At the same time, he's fighting to stave off across-the-board cuts to the defense budget ? the so called sequester ? that could happen in a couple weeks if Congress fails to reach some kind of budget deal.

Dempsey sat down with NPR's Rachel Martin to talk about the kind of impact these cuts will make and the recent cultural shifts in the U.S. military.

Interview Highlights

On the risks of sequester:

"Two words: time and casualties. The way this plays out, when you hollow out readiness, it means that when the force is needed, when an option is needed, to deal with a specific threat ... it would take us longer to react to those. So time is the issue. Some people would say, 'So what?' Well, time generally translates into casualties in my line of work.

"We will weather this. The military is never going to fail to answer the call when the nation is threatened. So we will weather this, but shame on us all if we weather it at the expense of those who choose to serve in uniform."

On cultural changes in the military:

"The reason that we have taken these steps is that we actually do foresee a military that has to adapt to a changing world, [and] not just a socially changing world but literally a demographically changing world.

"I think it's fairly common knowledge that our population of military-age young men who qualify for the military is declining. So as a very practical matter, we decided [that] if in 2020 we're going to need these young ladies, and we're going to need to attract as much diversity and as much talent as we can possibly attract, if that's going to be the case, then what are we waiting for?"

On updating military standards:

"There are currently 66 military occupational specialties that are not open to women. So what you've seen us do is invert the paradigm. The paradigm was: 'These are closed to women so we don't need to explain why.' Now the paradigm is: 'These could be open to women, so we'd better explain why not.' ... What that's done is that it will actually make us wrestle standards to the ground and figure out if we've got them right.

"There are existing standards, many of which haven't dusted off in a very long time, [and] many of which have been narrowly focused just on physical standards, but without the companion piece of potentially psychological and intellectual standards. All I'm suggesting is taken holistically ... I think this will be a very healthy thing for the institution. And it will also have the added benefit of allowing a greater part of the population to compete."

HTC One clone: GooPhone One launches in China

Whatever you might think your eyes do deceive you in this instance. We already know that HTC are planning simultaneous launch events in both London and New York for the arrival of their 2013 flagship; the HTC One, but Chinese mobile fans can grab a slice of that HTC design goodness now, sort of.

Rather than HTC having jumped the gun on their own launch date, what you?re looking at is the latest handset to come out of Chinese mobile manufacturer GooPhone. The company is famed for their impressively accurate lookalikes, having recently produced an HTC One S copy (called the GooPhone X1) and more impressively, an iPhone 5 clone running Android ICS called the GooPhone i5.

GooPhone One - HTC One Chinese knockoff

The HTC One clone, dubbed the GooPhone One, features the same distinctive ?capped? design which we?ve seen from the leaked images of the official HTC One, although we?re not 100% of the material choices or build quality in comparison to HTC?s well-established premium fit and finish. Naturally the notion behind the GooPhone One is a premium feel without the premium price tag, so the majority of the hardware isn?t on par with the official equivalent.

The 4.7-inch display most likely doesn?t feature Full HD resolution, the quad-core processor inside is MediaTek?s MT6589 chip and rather than a new version of HTC Sense, the GooPhone One sports what GizChina explain is Lewa OS. There?s apparently a gig of RAM on offer and surprisingly a 13-megapixel snapper, although we aren?t holding our breath for flagship-beating quality.

With such high-quality looking knockoffs like this, how much would you be willing to pay for a device that has the appearance of a top notch phone, without the underlying quality the real thing will most likely win out with.

India Ink: Modern in Mumbai

Cecilia Morelli Parikh is still a woman on a mission. Nearly two years ago, with Julie Leymarie and Aur?lie de Limelette, she opened Le Mill, a multibrand fashion and home store, in a converted warehouse in a gritty section of Mumbai, India, which brought a contemporary Western aesthetic to an affluent Indian shopper. Last November, Morelli Parikh and her co-founders (Leymarie is a former L?Or?al executive; de Limelette has designed numerous displays for Herm?s) rolled out a second store, this one in the city?s decidedly fancier Breach Candy area. Morelli Parikh describes the first store?s location as the equivalent of New York?s ?meatpacking district, 30 years ago,? while the new store?s surroundings are ?the Upper East Side.?

At 1,900 square feet, the second Le Mill is much smaller than the 15,000-square-foot flagship store (which, as of next month, will carry only home products, including the store?s own furniture and tabletop lines, designed by de Limelette, as well as European brands like Carl Hansen & Son, Gervasoni and Gubi). In contrast to the flagship?s industrial look ? the name Le Mill refers to the building?s early life as a rice mill ? the new store is ?more polished,? Morelli Parikh says. The entry floor is painted in a gray and white abstract geometric pattern; the cashier?s desk is a shipping container painted glossy white. It?s the perfect backdrop for the store?s sharply focused fashion offerings ? from contemporary labels like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, Erdem and the Row ? as well as jewelry by Mawi, En Inde, Shourouk and Tom Binns, among others, and gift items and tableware.

This spare but sensual look ? in design as well as fashion ? is what Morelli Parikh and her co-founders want to bring to the Indian luxury goods market, which still lags well behind that of, say, China. It wasn?t that long ago that Indian women began to abandon traditional dress for Western fashion, and even then they often chose flashy over fashion-forward. Add India?s high import duties and the fact that affluent Indians, who travel frequently, prefer to shop in London, Dubai and New York, and the women behind Le Mill had their work cut out for them.

But none of this fazes the American-born, London-raised Morelli Parikh, who, after working at Bergdorf Goodman, married Rohan Parikh ? who runs the real estate and construction branch of his family?s shipping company, Apurva Natvar Parikh Group, or A.N.P.G. ? and settled in Mumbai two years ago. She noticed a lack of multibrand stores, and realized that while many Western fashion and home products are made in India, with its traditions of craftsmanship, those goods ? and their contemporary aesthetic ? were generally not available there. So she, Leymarie and de Limelette set about ?bringing that heritage into the 21st century,? away from heavy and ornate toward a lighter, more modern take on tradition.

It is no surprise that the apartment that Morelli Parikh and her husband share, in an Art Deco building on Marine Road (which has one of the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world), embodies her ?more natural, raw, delicate? outlook. The 2,400-square-foot space?s monochromatic restraint is leavened by contemporary Indian artworks and luxurious touches like the master bedroom?s inlaid marble floor. The furnishings are a mix of de Limelette?s understated pieces for Le Mill, Western classics like a Carl Hansen & Son lounge chair and contemporary works like dining chairs by BDDW in New York (available by special order at Le Mill). The look is comfortable and stylish, but modern.

And that is exactly the direction that Morelli Parikh is taking with Le Mill?s second store. Now that younger, less mainstream designers have proven to be successful, Le Mill has introduced fashion from what Morelli Parikh calls ?even edgier? labels like Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou. Still, Morelli Parikh explains that there?s a market for more classic clothing, so this month Joseph will join the store?s designer roster. But its biggest move to date will be the addition of Azzedine Ala?a in March. Morelli Parikh explains that the designer already has a following among the store?s core customers, about 50 women who represent a good 60 percent of Le Mill?s ready-to-wear business. ?Ala?a is sexy, but it?s so chic,? she says.

Le Mill is forging ahead with plans to open stores in other prosperous Indian cities, like Delhi and Bangalore, and an e-commerce site will make its debut next month: ?There is lots of wealth in third- and fourth-tier cities where there are no shops,? Morelli Parikh says. Being a tastemaker in a brave new world is ?incredibly challenging,? she adds, ?but really fun.?

Should Schools Respond to Shootings More Like the Military Does?

160545913 Residents call for an end to gun violence during a march on February 2, 2013 in Chicago, Illinois. Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old honor student who performed in President Obama's second inauguration parade, was shot and killed while hanging out with friends on January 29. Pendleton was the 44th homicide recorded in Chicago for 2013.

The NRA and its like-minded allies have talked about putting armed guards in schools to prevent school shootings like the one we saw in Newtown. But when it comes to dealing with the aftermath of violence?be it a mass shooting in the classroom or gang-related violence off-campus?some schools are looking to another organization with its own expertise in guns: the military. Could the military?s methods actually do some good in America's schools?

That's one of the questions asked by a new two-part This American Life series that began airing Friday evening. The show is definitely worth a listen. One specific part that jumped out is a segment about how one Chicago public school in particular?West Englewood's Harper High School, which has seen 29 current and recent students shot and eight killed in the past year alone?is grappling with gun violence.

Three years ago, Harper administrators started using a system called After Action Review, or AAR, to respond to violent incidents involving their students. TAL chronicles the school's response after a former student gets shot outside of a gas station. The day after the shooting, Harper's principal convened the AAR group, which consists of about two-dozen people all together, ranging from social workers to the school's football coach. Such meetings serve as something of a debriefing during which the school pieces together the information they have about the incident: What happened? Who was involved? The group's main purpose is reactionary, but it's a start. If you listen to the episode, you can start to comprehend what a daunting task it must be to combat gun violence as a community-wide epidemic.

So where did the school get this idea from? That's right, the military. Here's the relevant snippet from tonight's transcript:

A couple years ago Chicago Public School officials were visiting Fort Leavenworth in Kansas to research military training tools?tools they might use to prepare people working in the city?s roughest schools. They came across the AAR, the Army?s tool for analyzing events, for assessing damage, compiling information, and trying to figure out how to respond. ...
A district administrator told me, think about it: the natural response for a school after a shooting is to go into panic, and to grieve and to hope that it never happens again. That?s normal. And so when the Chicago Schools first brought the AAR in from Fort Leavenworth, and suggested it to Harper some people said it felt wrong. Like they?d be planning for students to be shot. But the staff at Harper knew it would be better to have procedures and a plan to contain the damage. That?s the AAR.

You can listen to the first episode?here.

Want to Turn Your NFL Franchise Around? Look No Further Than EJ Manuel

September 23, 2012 should have been one of the best, most elating days of EJ Manuel?s young life. As a senior quarterback of a championship contenting Division I FBS team, Manuel played the best game of his life against an in-conference foe to set the team up to go on a championship run and have a chance to be cemented in college football history.

Still, there endured a lucking void of uneasiness and hopelessness in Manuel?s life, his mother, Jackie Manuel, was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly before the 2012 season.

For Manuel, this season has prepared him for anything the NFL could possibly throw at him.

Despite his devastating circumstances, Manuel knew that the world was not going to stop to allow him to grieve. He had to continue on, finding ways to numb the stress and anguish along the way.

Because quite frankly, no one was going to care, as Manuel predicted:

"I knew nobody else was going to care, to be honest with you. People will say, sorry, and this and that, but you've still got to go out and play. I understood that."

Manuel knew he had no choice but to suffer in silence:

"That's why I never really said anything publicly about it, because Florida State fans may say sorry, but when you're not winning games, they're still going to have things to say negatively or just be upset."

Somehow, Manuel was able to channel his thoughts on football when his team needed him, as Florida State went on to win the ACC Championship and Manuel secured his position as one of the top quarterback prospects to enter the 2013 draft.

Just like in college football, Manuel will not find any kind of forgiveness for the inability to perform in the NFL. Andy Reid was fired just months after losing his son in August. Having to cope with witnessing a suicide did not excuse Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel for the Chiefs? 2-14 record. No one shed a tear while Rex Ryan coached his 6-10 Jets while his father battled cancer.

What Manuel endured last season does not just prepare him for other traumatic events that occur in life; it gives him a unique sense of perspective that few people his age have. As Manuel told ESPN:

"That's why I told my teammates, 'don't take anything for granted, don't wait. If you can go ahead and do something now, if you can go study and watch film now, go do it. Don't try to say I'll put it off until tomorrow because you don't know what will come tomorrow."

Yes, Manuel is blessed with NFL talent (which is described below), but his ability to focus his energies on football while maintaining proper perspective on the game is what separates him from any other player in this draft class and would be tremendous asset to any NFL team.?

?

On the Field

We know Manuel has the mental makeup to survive the tremendous ups-and-downs in the NFL, but he is also a tremendously talented player in his own right and has the right tools to succeed in the NFL.?

Arm Strength

One of Manuel's best attributes is his arm strength, as it allows him to get out of trouble as much as it helps him make plays.?

This play is a fake screen pass that takes some time to develop, and Manuel's pass is almost intercepted by a roaming linebacker near his own goal line.?

However, even without stepping into the throw, Manuel gets enough juice on the pass to get the completion and the first down.?

Obviously, these are not the kind of throws Manuel should be making in the NFL, but this play is a perfect example of how Manuel's arm strength allows him to get away with throws other quarterbacks cannot.?

Even when watching him making routine throws on shorter routes, the ball comes out with a ton of velocity that make it very hard for defenders to get a chance to make a play on it. His arm strength is also evident in how he rarely has to take a big step into his throw in order to fit it into a tight window.?

?

Accuracy

Manuel is not going to thread needles in short-to-intermediate routes with?incredible?consistency, but he does have the ability to throw a tremendous deep ball, especially when given a clean pocket.?

In what was one of the best (and most clutch) throws of Manuel's 2012 season, he drops a ball right into the hands of Rodney Smith for the go-ahead touchdown.?

Notice how Manuel had enough arm strength so that he did not have to step into the ball. He put just enough touch on the pass so that it went over the defender's head but had enough velocity to meet Smith in the corner of the end zone.?

?

Mobility

While he is not quite Russel Wilson or Robert Griffin III, Manuel has enough mobility to keep defenses on their heels. He can make plays from broken situations as well as run the option.

This play is a designed option, which Manuel elects to keep. He has enough speed and agility to score from 16 yards out.?

Here is another play where he is able to break tackles and elude defenders to extend the play and hit a wide open receiver for a touchdown:

At 240 pounds, Manuel will be able to withstand much more contact in the NFL. His build is much larger than players like Michael Vick and RGIII, who have been unable to stay healthy while maximizing their potential as mobile quarterbacks.?

Manuel's athleticism is better compared to that of Andrew Luck. Luck is not going to outrun defensive backs, but he will take yards when they are available and has enough bulk to withstand hits from linebackers.?

?

Where does he have to improve?

Manuel has all of the physical tools to succeed in the NFL, but he just needs to tie everything?together?to become a more finished product.?

Manuel is a bit rough when it comes to mechanics and being a fluid passer. He is a bit awkward in his stance and delivery,?but that is one of the few areas of quarterbacking that can be (relatively) easily coached in the professional ranks.?

While he does have experience working under center, the offense he ran at Florida State was rather elementary, requiring just one or two reads on every dropback.?

However, recent history shows that quarterbacks in relatively simple college offenses can make the mental transition to the NFL, as long as they are willing to work at it. Cam Newton ran an offense at Aurburn that was ran with cards on the sideline, and RGIII ran a relatively simple spread system at Baylor.?

When you factor in Manuel's mental makeup, you would be hard-pressed to bet against his willingness to learn a pro offense and improve in his ability to make faster reads.?

?

Conclusion

Unlike last year, the 2013 quarterback draft class has no can't-miss prospect, and Manuel is no exception. He flashed outstanding arm strength and deep accuracy and has the mobility to run the pistol read-option offenses that are slowly taking over the NFL.?

Most of his weaknesses as a player lie in the more minute aspects of the game?mechanics, progressions, and ball placement.?

Where Manuel will ultimately go in this year's draft is still very much up in the air, as he can go anywhere between the first and fourth rounds, depending on how the draft process shakes out.?

No matter where Manuel will?ultimately?go, what he has been able to overcome this season will give him a unique weapon few players his age have developed: an?unmatched?sense of perspective and the ability to channel one's energy into the things that matter most to Manuel?family and football.

It may take some time for Manuel to develop into a professional, winning quarterback. The tools and the mental makeup to do the job are there.?

When paired with NFL-level ability, that kind of mindset and mental makeup alone has the potential to change the fortunes of a franchise. ?

Google Sues British Telecom in Retaliation for Android Lawsuit

Published on:

?Google has launched a patent lawsuit against UK based landline operator, British Telecom (BT) as the two sides escalate a tit-for-tat patent battle.

BT had initiated the fight in late 2011 after it sued Google over a series of mobile patents which it said were being infringed in Android smartphones.

Google has now hit back with its own lawsuit and it citing four patents covering IP networking technologies that it says BT is infringing. Google is suing BT in both the USA and the UK.

"We have always seen litigation as a last resort, and we work hard to avoid lawsuits," Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick told Reuters. "But BT has brought several meritless patent claims against Google and our customers - and they've also been arming patent trolls."

As a former state-owned monopoly with a sizeable research division, BT built up a formidable patent portfolio of its own, which was memorably demonstrated when the company pointed out that it owned the patent to the hyperlink used in websites, having patented it long before anyone knew of the concept.

BT eventually lost a test case against a USA based ISP in 2002 over that patent.

Apple makes MacBook Pro with Retina display faster and more affordable

Apple has just announced some changes to their industry-leading Mac Book Pro with Retina display lineup, including a new, lower starting price, and updated processors. According to Apple:

Apple is making the MacBook Pro with Retina display faster and more affordable with updated processors and lower starting prices. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now starts at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now features a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, and the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook comes with a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Apple today also announced that the 13-inch MacBook Air? with 256GB of flash has a new lower price of $1,399.

I've been using the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro since it was announced at WWDC 2012 last year, and it's the best computer I've ever used. It's so good I barely go near my Mac Pro anymore, and my MacBook Air has been retired. The only exception is the Intel HD GPU, which is redlined by Retina, but hopefully that gets solved in future generations.

At a lower starting price and with faster CPU options, it sounds even better. Anyone hitting the order button?

The New York Mets No Longer Face Financial Ruin, Are Completely Out Of Debt

MLB

Over the past few seasons, the New York Mets have shrunk payroll and quickly spiraled into non-contention. They haven?t finished with a record above .500 since 2008, and they haven?t made the playoffs since 2006. Their payroll in 2009 was $149 million, second highest in the league behind the Yankees. Their payroll in 2012 was 14th highest at $93 million.

Much of this blanket minimalism stemmed from the $1 billion lawsuit brought in 2011 against the team by the victims of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi Scheme. But as pointed out by New York Times, the roots of financial instability were already in place. Beginning in 2009, when the Mets? record dipped below .500 to 70-92, poor on-field performance led to a declining attendance; an average attendance of 38, 941 in 2009 was 7th best, but by 2012 that number had slipped to 28,035 and 17th. Coupled with the unfortunate timing of an economic downturn coinciding with the opening of Citi Field (2009) ? a financial strain in its own right ? dollars in Queens were at a premium. Then, the Madoff lawsuit.

In March, Mets ownership settled with the ponzi scheme victims, owing only $60 million, 6% of the original suit ? which is to say that, given the recent fiscal freefall, things were looking up. The team had walked into another $240 million from 12 new minority investors, providing enough money to pay off loans from Bank of America and Major League Baseball.

Though the expected trajectory of progress was forward leaning, it was still a few years away from reaching its pinnacle. But according to Mets owner Fred Wilpon (by way of ESPN?s Adam Rubin), Mets ownership is now completely free and clear, financially speaking. Although Wilpon makes a point of illuminating the true cause of the financial hair-splitting over the past few years ? it wasn?t all Madoff-related ? the more salient point is that the team has finally broke back even.

??It [the Madoff lawsuit] wasn?t, as people have written, the reason,? Wilpon said about the Madoff issue and payroll slashing. ?It was a balance there, because we had to make sure the banks got paid off all of the debt. There?s no one in my family ? there?s the Katz family, the Wilpon family, kids ? [that now] has any personal bank debt. Zero. Everything has been paid. We don?t owe a dollar to anybody. We have mortgages on buildings and stuff like that, but we don?t owe a dollar.

?That?s what made us tight. We were still getting revenues. Lots of revenues. But those revenues were going to pay off debt. That?s done.??

Field a competitive team, eh? Then you probably shouldn?t mess with the ballpark to help the visitors.

Keep a Laundry Basket in Your Car for Easier Grocery Transport

Keep a Laundry Basket in Your Car for Easier Grocery TransportCarrying in ton of grocery bags often involves multiple trips or a bit of discomfort and pain because you simply don't have enough hands to hold them all. Want to avoid that problem? Redditor themeattrain says you ought to use a laundry basket:

When you go grocery shopping, put a laundry basket in your trunk before you leave. It makes it easy to bring in all your stuff in one pain-free trip.

Even if you don't have one already, cheap laundry baskets only cost about $8. Pick one up at your local retailer (or online) and carry your groceries home pain-free.

(AP) ? If there were any questions about Florida's status in the Southeastern Conference following a loss at Arkansas last week, the Gators put those to rest Tuesday night.

With another lopsided win in league play.

And against defending national champion Kentucky, which had freshman star Nerlens Noel go down with a knee injury.

Scottie Wilbekin had 14 points and eight assists, Pat Young recorded his sixth double-double of the season and No. 7 Florida handled the 25th-ranked Wildcats 69-52.

The Gators (20-3, 10-1 SEC) snapped a five-game losing streak in the series and improved to 12-0 at home.

This one solidified Florida's spot atop the SEC.

"They're an outstanding basketball team," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "They were last year, they are this year. They're well coached, they're talented, they're very physical. Their guards are just jerking balls out of our guys' hands. We couldn't get near the basket on Young. He just physically took away the rim. And they're very active."

The Wildcats (17-7, 8-3) lost for the first time in six games, and it may have been costly.

Noel, the nation's leading shot-blocker, injured his left knee in the second half and was taken to a campus hospital for tests.

Noel, a forward who averages 10.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.5 blocks a game, landed awkwardly on his leg with about 8 minutes to play. He screamed in pain as trainers rushed to his side. Teammates carried him to the locker room. After the game, trainers pushed him through the halls of the O'Connell Center in a wheelchair and with his left leg in a brace.

"I'm physically sick right now for him," Calipari said. "What I'm hoping is it's not the extreme. I'm hoping it's some sort of twist, but we don't know."

Florida had a comfortable lead before the injury.

The Gators opened a double-digit lead, 31-19, in the first half on consecutive 3-pointers by Wilbekin, Mike Rosario and Kenny Boynton ? backbreaking shots that frustrated Calipari and had his players looking dazed and confused.

Florida extended it to 16 points on Rosario's layup. It was the biggest deficit the Wildcats had faced all season.

And they did little to erase it.

Young and fellow big man Erik Murphy, who was in early foul trouble, carried the load in the second half.

Young made a basket with a nifty, up-and-under move, had a reverse layup and added a sweet, left-handed hook. He finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

"When he gives incredible effort and plays with a really good motor, he's capable of getting double-doubles every night," said Florida coach Billy Donovan, who improved to 2-7 against Calipari. "He rebounded. He made great effort plays, kept balls alive. He did a really good job."

Murphy drained a 3-pointer after taking a charge on the other end. He also had three blocks.

The Gators needed big games from Young and Murphy considering they played a second game without forward Will Yeguete and were undersized against the Wildcats.

Nonetheless, the difference was guard play.

Wilbekin sliced through the lane at will, creating open shots for teammates and getting Kentucky's players out of position. Noel, Archie Goodwin and Willie Cauley-Stein spent time on the bench in foul trouble.

"I really thought he played an all-around, very, very good game," Donovan said of Wilbekin, who was benched to start Saturday's win against Mississippi State.

Fellow guard Rosario finished with 12 points for Florida, which has won every conference game by double digits. Murphy chipped in 10 points, and Casey Prather added 12 points and two blocks and took several charges, proving again to be a capable replacement for Yeguete.

Cauley-Stein and Julius Mays led Kentucky with 10 points apiece.

The Wildcats shot 42 percent from the field and had 17 turnovers.

"We just played soft, scared, uptight," Mays said. "We let the pressure get to us. Usually, we're really good with the press. I don't know what it was today, but we just weren't tough enough."

Calipari warned reporters Monday that beating Florida would be a difficult task, especially since the Gators have played so well at home and have a much more experienced roster.

The most significant disparities came in the paint and off turnovers. The Gators scored 36 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers; the Wildcats had 26 points down low and just five off Florida's 11 turnovers.

Afterward, though, all the talk was about Noel's injury.

"I don't know what ended up happening, but it was clear from him moaning in pain that he was struggling," Donovan said. "I admire the way he plays and I admire his energy. I don't know how badly he's hurt, but the energy came from a hustle play. It kind of embodies who he is as a player. He's a hustle-play guy, and you just feel sad if there's any kind of length or duration that he's out because everybody admires in this league, coaches-wise, how he plays the game."

NKorea vows more rockets, doesn't mention nukes

(AP) ? North Korea's powerful politburo has vowed to continue firing "powerful long-range rockets," but a statement made no mention of Pyongyang's promise to conduct a nuclear test.

The United States and its allies have been on edge since North Korea said last month it will conduct its third nuclear test to protest toughened sanctions over a December rocket launch that the U.N. called a cover for a banned missile test.

As the world waits, surrounding countries are warning that a test will prompt more sanctions.

Pyongyang's state media said Tuesday that ruling Workers' Party Political Bureau members are promising future rocket launches as part of an "all-out action of high intensity."

The politburo also called for festivities surrounding the July 27 anniversary of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

Report: Justin Verlander Says No to Team USA and 2013 World Baseball Classic

In a move that Detroit Tigers fans wanted to hear, Justin Verlander told Joe Torre and Team USA that he will not be pitching in this year?s World Baseball Classic.

At a press conference today in Lakeland, Fla., Verlander (via Bob Nightengale) said the reason he gave was that he is behind schedule this year and does not want to fall further behind:

Tigers fans will be happy that he will not be pitching meaningful baseball before the start of the season as Detroit tries to repeat as American League champions.

Coming off a year which saw Verlander go 17?8 with an ERA of 2.64 and a league-high strikeout total of 239, the feeling starting the season is that Verlander?s focus needs to be on the Tigers the entire time.

Still this is a definite blow for Team USA?s chances in the upcoming WBC.

Torre, USA?s manager this time around, really wanted to have the ace on his roster as the group?which contains Canada, Mexico and the Dominican Republic?is one of the toughest in pool play.

With a weak American team and the loaded Japanese and Venezuelan rosters awaiting in the later rounds, the chances of team USA winning the classic are very slim.

While Major League Baseball?s corporate office in New York will be scratching their heads as to how they can get better participation from American players in the future, Detroit fans will no longer have to worry about Verlander taxing himself too much too early.

Samsung wireless charging cradle could hint at Galaxy S4 functionality

A recent FCC filing details a Samsung-made wireless charging station, the company?s first foray into a technology that is slowly but surely starting to catch on with manufacturers and consumers alike. The documentation of the Qi-compatible cradle provides plenty of details, including a plethora of images demonstrating the device.

In one image a Galaxy S3 is observed on the charging mat, a curious vision of what might have been. The GS3 was initially rumored to ship with wireless charging capabilities built into the phone, but the idea never came to fruition (unless you count third-party accessories). But the timing of the appearance of the Samsung-branded dock, which doesn?t seem sized to any particular device, should get people talking about the potential for wireless charging in the upcoming Galaxy S4.

Up until now, perhaps the most noteworthy Android device to ship with wireless charging out of the box was the Nexus 4 (the handset?s charging peripheral has not shipped yet, however). With awareness of the technology growing (and the chance to sell another $50+ accessory) it seems likely that Samsung will implement the feature in their highly-anticipated flagship phone.

Wireless charging would round out a set of specs that include could include multi-core Exynos processing, a 1080p Super AMOLED display, and 13MP camera. The cradle itself very well could go on to charge future Samsung releases from the G4 to the Galaxy Note 4.

Home Improvement Projects Are Full Of Possible Issues ? Learn ...

TIP! How will you clean up? Renovations can create quite a bit of debris. This debris can seriously hamper your progress if you haven?t sorted out a way to dispose of it.

There are a number of excellent resources available to anyone looking to take on a home improvement project, whether they?re experienced or still a beginner. The many available books, videos, software and e-guides all provide a wealth of information. The article below has the best ideas to help you safely complete your home improvement projects.

TIP! More and more homeowners have put in vinyl decks. Make sure to clean the surface of your deck about twice a year in order to maintain a good look.

Safety first! If your windows are covered with blinds, you should always tie or snip the cords. These long cords cause a strangulation hazard to children and pets. Make sure that you leave some length so that you can open and close your blinds, though not any more than you need. Tie them or cut them off before there is a terrible accident.

TIP! If you are going to put a wood burning stove in your home, be sure that Environmental Protection Agency has certified it. Why is this important? Well, the EPA obviously deals with the environment first, but their safety rating also means that the stove is safe for your home.

When replacing a floor, consider using vinyl to save money. It?s easy to install vinyl because it comes with adhesive backing. Additionally, it is water resistant, durable and strong. You can buy vinyl as individual tiles or by the roll for large areas.

TIP! When you are doing any home improvement projects, you can save on energy by just doing one simple thing. Rather than plug your electronics into various outlets, just make use of a power strip.

One habit which is good for maintaining your home improvement project, is setting aside a specific budget for upgrades and repairs. By dedicating a reasonable amount of your income to home maintenance and upgrades, it will help keep your house in much better shape. If money remains at year?s end, it can be put toward upgrades or major renovations down the road.

TIP! If you have a huge home improvement job lined up, be sure to tell your contractor about any budget constraints you may have. If your contractor is aware of your budget, they will then be able to make decisions with that in mind.

Having the right lighting in a room can make a huge difference. Bright rooms are ideal to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Putting in an additional light fixture can really brighten up a room. When you bring new light to a shaded room, the entire atmosphere is brighter.

TIP! If a home improvement is going to come close to a source of water, shut the water down. Understand where to find the water shutoffs.

The tips you just read about will help you get a good understanding of what you need to do to succeed with your home improvement project. The amount of information available can be overwhelming, so you need to be aware of how to utilize it all to your best advantage. By doing so, you can improve your skills and make your home look great.

All About Insurance: The Winter boat Insurance

While lots of people opt to permit their watercraft to stay uninsured when not in use, this decision can be disastrous for the boat owner. In lots of areas of the country use of boats and other types of watercraft over the long winter months is impossible, due to climate changes and adverse climatic conditions. Lots of boat owners mistakenly think that, when a boat is in winter storage, insurance coverage for the vessel is no longer a necessity.

The boat owner who designs to store a vessel for any timeframe ought to speak about the importance of winter storage protection designs with a trusted insurance representative. Most insurance designs will give the boat owner a reduced rate for winter storage coverage, while still allowing for the vessel's owner to protect his valuable property. Selecting this option can safeguard the boat owner's investment, and permit for peace of mind, when in cases where winter storage is a necessity.

Statistically speaking, more boats are damaged every year while in winter storage, than those that are in actual use. In some cases whole vessels are lost, due to unforeseeable circumstance. Damages to a stored vessel can run from minimal (such as destruction by nesting animals, petty theft of stored items, or even slight weather destroy) to major (such as total destruction of the watercraft by a fire or natural catastrophe). because the boat is not in use, does not mean it is entirely shielded from unexpected events.

Thoughts from the Business Travel Show | Head for Points

I ran a couple of posts in the last few days based on news I picked up last Tuesday at Earls Court at the Business Travel Show.

This is the main UK event for the UK business travel industry, and attracts a mix of corporate travel managers, PA?s and a scattering of keen travellers.

Regular readers of Head for Points will know that I am very sceptical about travel shows. Business Travel Market did not impress me last year, neither did The Luxury Travel Fair.

The Business Travel Show is the best of the bunch. That is not saying much, though, and it is weakened by BA refusing to exhibit. Ironically, though, Willie Walsh ? the CEO of BA?s parent ? did give the opening address.

Business Travel Show

The only regular exhibitor who always makes a big effort is Virgin Atlantic. This year, yet again, they had a huge stand with Upper Class seat mock-ups. Japan Airlines was also showing off its new fully-flat business class seat.

That was it, though, in terms of seats you could try out. Previous years have seen a better selection.

Apart from the airlines, you have a mix of travel management companies, a lot of very small (one desk) airline stands, the train companies and the train ticketing groups, a few individual hotels and a few hotel chains (Travelodge had the biggest stand, Hilton by comparison had a very poor effort).

A key reason to go is the Business Traveller magazine wine tastings, which run twice a day on their stand! I try to meet friends here if I can, and it is a pleasant way to spend an hour. (Although Tom Otley, editor of Business Traveller, went down a notch in my estimation when he said he?s never read this blog!)

They feature wines from their ?cellar in the sky? awards, which reward the best in-flight wine list. Amazingly (!) British Airways actually won one of these awards this year, for one of its First Class white wines.

One thing I did come away with was a proper understanding of Virgin Atlantic?s coverage these days. They had a huge route map on one wall of their stand.

I couldn?t help but notice that all of my long-haul travel from the past 18 months ? Dubai, Barbados, New York, Cape Town ? could have been done with Virgin.

I have real issues with Virgin Atlantic over their ludicrous cancellation policies on award seats (you lose 25%-100% of your miles), and their ?coffin? style Upper Class seats don?t work well with young children. However, it is time I looked at trying them out for a long-haul redemption.

Graham Threatens Hagel Confirmation Over Benghazi; Rand Paul Is Like a Side Order

Sen.?Lindsey Graham?found another excuse to block the nominations of Chuck Hagel and John Brennan: Benghazi. On CBS'?Face The Nation, the South Carolina Republican said he wants more information from the White House before either will be confirmed. Graham was simple when explaining his stance on the matter: "No confirmation without information," he said. Graham wants to know if the President ever called the Libyan government to ask for help when the U.S. consulate was under attack on September 11. "I don?t think we should allow Brennan to go forward to the CIA directorship, Hagel to be confirmed for secretary of Defense, until the White House gives us an accounting," Graham said. "Did the president at any time during this eight-hour attack, pick up the phone and call anybody in Libya to get help for these folks?" Graham asked. "Secretary [Hillary] Clinton said she was screaming on the phone at Libyan officials. There?s no voice in the world like that of the president of the United States. And I do believe if he had picked up the phone and called the Libyan government, these folks could have gotten out of the airport, to the annex and the last two guys may very well be alive. And if he did call the Libyan officials and they sort of blew him off, that would effect whether or not I would give foreign aid in the future to Libya. But if he failed to call on behalf of those people under siege, then I think that?s a massive failure of leadership by our commander in chief."

Sen.?Rand Paul?doesn't see his Tea Party response to the President's State of the Union address as a sign of division in the Republican party. It's just "extra," Paul said on CNN's?State of the Union, like the order of coleslaw you get with fish and chips. "To me, I see it as extra response, I don?t see it as necessarily divisive," Paul said. "I won?t say anything on there that necessarily is like, 'Oh, Marco Rubio?s wrong.' He and I don?t always agree, but the thing is, this isn?t about he and I, this is about the tea party, which is a grassroots movement, a real movement, millions of Americans who are still concerned about some of the deal making that goes on in Washington." Paul said his response would call for the President to cut foreign aid to Middle Eastern countries like Egypt and Pakistan, requiring a balanced budget and cutting federal taxes. Paul also touched on Kentucky politics, like how he doesn't anticipate a Tea Party challenger to step to Senate leader Mitch McConnell. "I think it?s unlikely," Paul said. "I haven?t heard any Republican challenger come forward. I don?t know, but I haven?t heard of any challenger come forward." He also joked about the rumors Ashley Judd was going to run for office in his state. "When I heard Ashley Judd might run for office, I thought it was Parliament since she lives in Scotland half the year," he said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is sick and tired of spending cuts and she just won't take them anymore. At least that's how we interpreted her comments about sequester solutions on Fox News Sunday. "The fact is we've had plenty of spending cuts, $1.6 trillion in the Budget Control Act. What we need is growth," Pelosi said. Pelosi made the case that slashing spending indiscriminately would hinder the countries growth potential. "It is almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem," the former Speaker of the House said. Unfortunately, Pelosi knows spending cuts can't be ruled out of a potential sequester deal, but she stressed more revenue is the answer. "What we do need is more revenue and more cuts," Pelosi said. "What I would like to see that is a big, balanced, bold [budget] proposal. Short of that, we must do something to avoid the sequester." She sees cutting oil subsidies as a good place a start adding revenue. "We have made the cut in terms of agriculture subsidies, there are tens of billions of cuts there. That should be balanced for eliminating subsidies for Big Oil," Pelosi added. "It isn't as much as spending problem as it is a priorities."?

RELATED: Red Tape Finds Bipartisan Support in Immigration Reform

Sen. John McCain wants the President to stop yakkin' so much and hold a sit down at the White House with top party leadership to try and end the sequester standoff. That's the plan he revealed today on Fox News Sunday. "What I would like to see is the president call the [party] leaders over to the White House and say, 'Look, we've got to solve this problem,'" McCain said. "All he does is go out and make speeches." Critical spending cuts will click in on March 1 if another deal can't be reached to avoid it, just like the fiscal battle that dominated the holidays. "Republicans and Democrats are responsible for this new 'cliff,' and I'll take responsibility for it for the Republicans. But we've got to avoid it, we've got to stop it," McCain said. "The president is the same one that during the campaign said, 'It's not going to happen.' He just dismissed it."

Sen.?Angus King?isn't sure the assault weapons ban is going to pass through the House, he said on?State of the Union. The Maine independent is "skeptical" of the ban, but he said he's bullish on universal background checks and magazine limits. The problem with the assault weapons ban, King said, is that it's too easy to cheat the restrictions. "I?m skeptical," he said. "I?m leaning against simply because what I want to focus on is the functionality, not the looks... What we really need to do is focus on what will really work, and to me that?s universal background checks and perhaps limits on magazines," King said.?

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said he's the oversight for every U.S. drone strike that the President orders during his appearance on Face the Nation. On the other Sunday shows, many politicians were questioning the amount of oversight that governs the drone program. John McCain suggested the Pentagon should be in charge of drones instead of the CIA during his appearance on Fox News Sunday. Rogers said he's the guy who looks over everything before the strikes are authorized. "I, as chairman, review every single airstrike that we use in the war on terror, both from the civilian and the military side when it comes to airstrikes," Rogers said. "There is plenty of oversight here. There?s not an American list somewhere overseas for targeting, that does not exist. ? The oversight rules have been consistent." Rogers also defended the strike against?Anwar al-Awlaki, saying when an American "joins forces with the enemy" they lose their constitutional rights to due process and can become targets of the American military. "Our options were limited," Rogers said. "This was a tool that we could use to stop further terrorist attacks against Americans."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor attacked the President for trying to raise taxes "every time you turn around," during his appearance on NBC's Meet the Press. "The problem is every time you turn around, the answer is to raise taxes,"?Cantor said. "He just got his tax hike on the wealthy. And you can't in this town every three months raise taxes. Again, every time, that's his response." Cantor was speaking in reference to the coming sequester negotiations that are going to grip Washington. Unsurprisingly, Cantor wants more spending cuts. "We've got a spending problem, everybody knows it,"?he said. "The House has put forward an alternative plan, and there's been no response in any serious way from the Senate and the White House. And it's time, we've really got to do it." David Gregory asked how Cantor could even think about letting the sequester happen when his own state, Virginia, would be hit so hard by the automatic cuts to defense spending. "The bottom line is we want tax reform, but we want to plug those loopholes that the president talks about, to bring down tax rates because we believe that's pro-growth and we can get the economy growing again, let people who earn the money keep more of it," Cantor said. "The president's not talking about that. He's talking about raising more taxes to spend."
