(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard absorbed the largest quarterly loss in its history as the Silicon Valley pioneer owned up to past mistakes that have left it scrambling to adapt to a shifting technology market.

The loss of $8.9 billion announced Wednesday didn't come as a surprise. HP telegraphed the news earlier this month when it disclosed plans to take an $8 billion charge to reflect the shrinking value of Electronic Data Systems, a technology consulting service it bought for $13 billion in 2008.

It represented another mortifying setback for a 73-year-old company that once had the reputation for being a fountain of innovation ?and a great place to work, to boot. Now, HP is struggling to reverse perceptions that it's becoming a technological dinosaur bogged down in bureaucracy as it slashes its work force to help offset a downturn in revenue.

The company is counting on Meg Whitman, its third CEO in slightly more than two years, to be its savior. While stressing she believes HP can still be great again, Whitman made it clear Wednesday that it will be a long slog.

"Make no mistake about it: We are still in the early stages of a turnaround," Whitman told analysts during a conference call.

That has become Whitman's mantra since HP hired her as CEO 11 months ago. Later in the call, Whitman acknowledged "the very serious execution issues" facing HP as it tries to catch up to its rivals and cope with a weakening economy, particularly in Europe.

Whitman, who became one of the world's best-known chief executives during a decade-long stint running eBay Inc., has been shaking things up at HP by reorganizing divisions, ushering in new managers and slashing costs through the job cuts.

As Whitman's remarks underscored the enormity of the challenge facing HP, more investors bailed out of the company's stock. HP shares sank 94 cents, or nearly 5 percent, to $18.26 in Wednesday's after-hours trading, reversing earlier gains after the latest quarterly results were released. The shares have lost more than half their value in the past two years, a factor that contributed the EDS charge during the three-month period ending in July.

HP also had to absorb charges to cover severance payments for the first wave of the 27,000 workers it is jettisoning to dramatically reduce its expenses as its revenue shrivels. The company, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., now expects to drop 11,500 employees from its payroll by the end of October, up from its previous target of 9,000. Another 15,500 employees will be let go through October 2014.

The cutbacks are driven by the rising popularity of mobile phones and tablet computers ? devices that are reducing demand for personal computers. That's bad news for HP, which is the world's largest maker of PCs and printers.

To cope with the upheaval, HP has been expanding into technology consulting, computer software, data storage and high-end servers made for companies and government agencies. All those specialties are more profitable than the fiercely competitive PC market, but HP hasn't been evolving rapidly enough to avoid an alarming deterioration in its financial performance.

Like several other major technology companies, HP has also been hurt by the recent economic turmoil in Europe. The uncertainty caused by unwieldy government debt in Europe has curbed spending on the continent.

If HP's slump worsens, management warned it may have to register additional charges in the current quarter to account for trouble in other acquisitions. Without citing specifics, HP executives pointed to the company's software operations as one area that could be lumped with a major accounting charge. That division includes Autonomy, a business software service that HP bought for $11 billion last year.

The fiscal third-quarter loss Wednesday translates to $4.49 per share for a period covering the three months ending in July. The company earned $1.9 billion, or 93 cents per share, at the same time last year.

HP's revenue sank 5 percent from last year to $29.7 billion. That was about $500 million below the projections of analysts polled by FactSet. It marked HP's fourth consecutive year-over-year quarterly decrease in revenue.

PC sales during the latest quarter fell by about 10 percent from the same time last year, Whitman said. She traced the decline to fierce price competition, a growing preference for tablet computers and smartphones, and postponed purchases among buyers waiting for the release of a new line of machines running Windows 8, a radical overhaul of Microsoft Corp.'s operating system set for release October 26.

Whitman's clampdown on expenses also appeared to be delivering savings more quickly than Wall Street anticipated. If not for the company's various charges, HP said it would have earned $1 per share. That figure was 2 cents per share above analyst estimates.

50 buildings destroyed in Northern Calif. fire

MANTON, Calif. (AP) ? A Northern California fire burned dozens of buildings and threatens hundreds more as firefighters work to stop the blaze in a densely forested, remote section of the state.

Fire crews assessing the rural area determined Tuesday that 50 buildings had been destroyed, state fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said. The count included buildings burned since the fire began, but officials did not say when the structures were destroyed.

Officials didn't have an accurate count yet of how many of the structures were homes, but Berlant noted the buildings were spread across a vast rural area of mostly residential homes.

The blaze, which was sparked by lightning on Saturday has consumed more than 33 square miles and continues to threaten hundreds of homes.

Nearly 1,900 firefighters were battling the fire in rugged, densely forested terrain as it threatened 3,500 homes in the remote towns of Shingletown, Manton and Viola, about 170 miles north of Sacramento.

As a the wildfire raged near Lynn Rodgers' home of less than a year, the evacuated resident said Tuesday she remained optimistic ? despite her growing frustration and fear.

"Yeah, but what can you do? Everything is in God's hands ? and the firefighters," said Rodgers, who lives in Shingletown.

Like Rodgers, many other evacuees were anxious to hear the latest information from officials. Dozens of people, as well as about a dozen dogs, were waiting at the Redding gym.

"The evacuation part? It's hard because I don't know what's happening to the house up there," said Jimmy Hall, a Shingletown resident whose family spent another night sleeping on cots.

"It's my dad's house. ... There's a lot of things in there," Hall added. "I've heard that my friend is still up there protecting his house. It's just hard. Look at how we're sleeping."

Eric Kiltz, an emergency services coordinator for the American Red Cross, said "there's more frustration than anxiety, and people, for the most part are grateful they have a safe and secure place to stay, even though their home may be lost."

The fast-moving fire is one of many burning across the West, where dry lightning has sparked fires in grass, brush and timber.

California Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday that National Guard troops will be assisting with the firefighting efforts. The news comes a day after the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it is offering federal funds to help cover the cost.

The fire forced the closure of Highway 44 and other roads, and prompted the declaration of an emergency in Shasta County.

Elsewhere in California, a massive wildfire in Plumas National Forest continued to expand, helped by gusty winds. The blaze, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, has consumed nearly 98 square miles since it started at the end of July and threatens about 900 homes.

In Mendocino County, the sheriff's office issued a mandatory evacuation for residents in Covelo due to a wildfire that has burned more than 15 square miles of thick timber and rugged terrain. One outbuilding has been destroyed and 45 homes were threatened by the blaze, officials said. The fire was sparked by lightning Saturday in a remote area, making it difficult for fire crews to access.

In Washington state, the National Weather Service warned about extreme fire danger in the eastern part of the state as forecasts called for thunderstorms with lightning.

Fire crews to the north still hoped to fully contain a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and 26 outbuildings and damaged at least six other homes, fire information officer Mark Morrow said.

The fire, about 75 miles east of Seattle, has caused an estimated $8.3 million in property damage.

Lightning over the weekend also sparked smaller fires in Colorado, Idaho and Utah.

Holograms present celebs with new afterlife issues

1 hr.

When Tupac Shakur rose from the stage in the California desert earlier this year, it was not only a jaw-dropping resurrection, but also the beginning of a new form of live entertainment.?

"Come with me," the digital Shakur called out, not just to tens of thousands of screaming fans but seemingly to other artists.?

Follow, they will. Elvis Presley's estate announced it has authorized holograms of the King of Rock, Marilyn Monroe's estate has expressed interest and there's no shortage of other beloved stars whose fans would die to see them perform again.

Advances in digital artistry make it all possible, presenting celebrity estates with new commercial and creative opportunities, but also some ethical quandaries.

"I think we've scratched the surface with Tupac," said Dylan Brown, a filmmaker who along with director Philip Atwell and effects studio Digital Domain helped bring the Shakur hologram to life. "If it's done tastefully, like Tupac was done tastefully, I think it could be a wonderful form of entertainment."

Brown, owner of The Yard Entertainment, and Atwell, owner of Geronimo Films, had each toyed with the idea of using holograms in concerts for a decade, but the technology wasn't there. Brown, who works closely with Snoop Dogg and Atwell, who collaborates with Dr. Dre, knew that once they chose Shakur for the holographic debut, it had to be more than just a technological marvel.

"We wanted to be really respectful of the family foremost," said Atwell. "We just wanted to do something that wasn't in bad taste."

Reaction to the Shakur hologram was huge, with the performance garnering 15 million YouTube hits within 48 hours and winning a top award at the creative marketing gathering Cannes Lions.

"You start to open up a whole new universe of legal questions," said Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer of Digital Domain, which is also working on the Presley holograms. "As such, we have no intentions of doing anything other than being utterly respectful of these legends and icons."

Because it's two-dimensional, the Shakur performer isn't a true hologram, which, by definition, is a 3-D image (Ulbrich notes the technology isn't quite there for that.). But it's a vivid digital creation that audiences are far more accustomed to seeing in movies ? except there is no screen.

Brown and Atwell say part of its challenge was integrating Shakur's performance into the larger show featuring Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and others.

Shakur's entry and exit had to be carefully planned to fit into the show, with the creators opting to have his image burst apart into a cloud of gold specks. Brown and Atwell said the dissolve seemed most appropriate. "He has a mystique and that aura that kind of transcends death even," Brown said.

Stars wield extensive control over how their names, voices and images are used after they die through likeness, trademark and copyright protections, and now holograms offer them yet another consideration.

Before digital filmmaking, attorney Laura Zwicker said the question for her clients boiled down to "Could you use my photograph?" Now, they have to consider whether they'll be returned to the big screen, inserted in commercials or put back on stage, said Zwicker a strategic wealth planner in the Los Angeles office of the firm Greenberg Glusker.

Celebrity likeness rights vary around the country, with stars' estates in California enjoying 70 years of protection. Indiana offers 100 years and 16 other states have laws protecting celebrities' likenesses, said Jeremiah Reynolds, an attorney with the firm Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump and Aldisert. The firm handles numerous intellectual property issues, including those related to Michael Jackson's estate.

While holograms are likely covered by existing laws, potential legal challenges will likely focus on whether the performance is protected by the First Amendment. "You get into very subjective areas about what is artistic," Reynolds said.

Marilyn Monroe's estate threatened legal action earlier this year against a company claiming it was working on a digital show using the model-actress' likeness. The technology for holograms or other digital performances are intriguing, the estate's handlers at Authentic Brands say, but they would only partner with people who could make a top-notch product.

Brown and Atwell said they felt enormous pressure to make sure the Shakur performance was worthy of being an introduction to a new form of live entertainment.

"I also hope that the people who do follow us do it with the same care and the same sense of dedication because I would hate to see a bad version of Marilyn Monroe, a bad version of Elvis up there," Brown said.

Brown and Atwell are proud that Shakur is leading the hologram revolution.

"We're part of the hip hop generation," Brown said. "It shows the growth of that culture, of that business and it says a lot about what we've dedicated part of our lives to."

"There was a time, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, when people were waiting for hip hop to disappear," he said. "Now not only is hip hop here to stay, even if you die we'll bring you back."
