Sony Mobile Communications appoints new CEO

Sony Mobile Communications has announced that Kunimasa Suzuki has been named president and CEO of the company, effective 16 May 2012, replacing incumbent Bert Nordberg, who will be promoted to serve as company chairman.

Suzuki will assume responsibility to oversee planning and design of all Sony's consumer products and services, with the aim of strengthening horizontal integration and enhancing the user experience across Sony's entire product and network service lineup, said the company.

The appointment comes as no surprise to makers in Sony's handset component supply chain in Taiwan, believing a CEO from Sony will be able to optimize resources available within the group and roll out new smartphone models integrating Sony's expertise in the manufacture of handsets, PCs, tablet PCs and TVs.

The Sony Group has adjusted its purchasing strategy by raising the ratio of outsourced parts and components after the 2011 earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, noted the sources, adding that Taiwan-based suppliers may benefit if Sony Mobile Communications also adopt the same policy. The procurement of parts and components at Sony Mobile Communications are still being handled by the company's purchasing team in Europe, revealed the sources.
